Research Methodology
This report was put together by Hayden Bond, an independent AI SEO practitioner with no vendor relationships and no affiliate arrangements. Data is triangulated from SimilarWeb, First Page Sage, and a16z consumer app rankings. This page is updated monthly as the market moves.
How This Report Measures Market Position
Web traffic share is the most widely cited metric for AI platform market position. It is also increasingly insufficient on its own. A brand making optimization decisions based on web traffic share alone would heavily over-index on ChatGPT and underweight platforms like Copilot, Claude, and Gemini — precisely where enterprise buying decisions and mobile-first discovery are actually happening.
This report triangulates across three data sources because each measures a different usage surface. SimilarWeb captures browser-based web traffic. Apptopia captures iOS and Android mobile app daily active users. Desktop app usage — an increasingly significant surface as practitioners adopt native AI apps — is not captured by either source. The numbers in this report reflect what is measurable. Where data is not publicly available, that gap is named rather than estimated.
The practical implication: read every number in this report through the lens of your buyer's actual AI usage context. If your buyers are enterprise decision-makers working in Microsoft 365, Copilot's web referral share understates its market position significantly. If your buyers are mobile-first, Claude's trajectory matters more than its web traffic rank. If your buyers use desktop AI apps — increasingly common among practitioners — neither web traffic nor mobile DAU captures how they are actually using these platforms.

Agentic Ecosystem Status
When a user asks an AI agent to research a topic, book a trip, or compile a report, the agent clicks, reads, and acts. The human may never see your site at all. These platforms are where that agent activity originates. Scale tells you how much of it is happening. Bounce rate tells you how much intent the human behind the agent actually had.

AI Search Platform Usage Across Surfaces
Web traffic, mobile app usage, and desktop app usage are three distinct surfaces measured by three different data sources — none of them complete on their own. SimilarWeb measures browser-based web traffic. Apptopia measures iOS and Android app installs and daily active users. Desktop app usage — how practitioners increasingly access Claude, ChatGPT, and others — is not captured by either source. The numbers below reflect what is measurable. The gaps are real and worth naming.

The Infrastructure Shift: From Search to Action
The market pivots toward agentic action with Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) representing a Tier 2 Infrastructure signal.
Bypassing the Click
UCP enables agents to execute purchases via a standardized API layer, removing the need for users to visit merchant sites.
Transactional Authority
Competition shifts from a battle for clicks to a battle for transactional authority within agent ecosystems.
Agent-Ready Brands
Agentic readiness becomes critical for direct commercial outcomes as AI agents mediate more transactions.
Referral Metrics
When an LLM does send a user to an external site, this is where that traffic lands. Referral share measures each platform's slice of total AI-driven referral traffic arriving on third-party sites. Small numbers, high intent.

Gemini
24.1%
12-Month Trend: +18.7pp YoY
More than quadrupled share from 5.7% in February 2025. Deep Workspace embedding and mobile growth. Structural market shift confirmed.

ChatGPT
64.5%
12-Month Trend: -14.0pp YoY
Still dominant by web traffic. Mobile DAU erosion is the counterweight — below 40% for the first time. $122B funding round anchors long-term position.

Copilot
1.1% (web only)
12-Month Trend: —
The most misleading number in this report. Web share does not capture enterprise deployment. 85% Fortune 500 penetration and 154 minutes per day power user engagement make this a Tier 1 platform for B2B brands.

Claude
3.3%
12-Month Trend: +1.8pp YoY
Fastest growing platform in the cohort. #1 iOS App Store, 167% MoM DAU growth, 139 minutes per day power user engagement. Enterprise embedding deals accelerating.

Grok
3.4%
12-Month Trend: +2.9pp YoY
Entered top 3 referral share for the first time. Mobile-driven growth and X integration sustaining momentum.

DeepSeek
3.2%
12-Month Trend: —
Strong globally, limited US enterprise traction. Open-source model availability driving developer adoption.

Perplexity
1.8%
12-Month Trend: -0.2pp YoY
Stable niche position. Lowest power-user churn at 11.7%. High-intent research audience makes this referral traffic disproportionately valuable.
Optimization Guidance
AEO Strategy
ChatGPT and Gemini control the majority of web-based AI referral traffic and remain the primary optimization targets for broad informational coverage. But mobile DAU data complicates this picture — Claude is growing fastest among engaged users, and Copilot dominates enterprise time-on-platform at 154 minutes per day. Optimize for web traffic share first, then layer platform-specific content strategy based on where your buyers actually spend time.
GEO Priority
The next competitive layer is transactability. Google's Universal Commerce Protocol enables agents to execute purchases via API without a site visit. Brands that are not agent-ready will be invisible in agentic commerce. Build API-first architecture for product catalogs and checkout now, before this becomes standard buyer behavior.
Modern SEO
Schema markup, clean product feeds, and accurate technical documentation are the signals quality-focused platforms like Claude and Perplexity use to determine what to trust and cite. Claude's 26.7% bounce rate — lowest in the cohort — signals a high-intent audience that found what it was looking for. Get the structured data right and the representation follows.
Enterprise and Mobile
If your buyers work in large organizations, web traffic share is not the right optimization signal. Copilot's 154 minutes per day power user engagement and 85% Fortune 500 penetration make it a Tier 1 platform for B2B brands regardless of its web referral rank. If your buyers are mobile-first, Claude's trajectory — #1 iOS, 167% MoM DAU growth, 139 minutes per day engagement — makes it the highest-priority emerging platform in the cohort.
